The vinyl listening bar, Chelsea edition

New York has fallen for the listening bar: a room built around records played properly, on a serious sound system, with a drink in hand and the volume set for listening rather than shouting over.

Music For A While is Chelsea's take on it, a lamp-lit Vinyl Room beneath the Hotel Alameda on West 27th Street, with a club room on the other side of the wall for when the night picks up.

Where the listening bar comes from

The format traces back to Japan's jazz kissa, the cafés that grew up in the twentieth century around record collections and hi-fi equipment most people could not afford at home. You came to hear the record, the owner chose what played, and the room was arranged around the speakers.

The modern listening bar keeps that respect for the record and loosens the rules. The selection runs wider than jazz, there is a cocktail list, and conversation is welcome. The music is still the point of the room.

What makes a good listening room

A few things separate a listening room from a bar that happens to own a turntable.

  • A sound system tuned for the room, loud enough to feel and clear enough to talk over
  • A selector who plays records, reads the room and builds a night rather than a playlist
  • Seating that encourages staying a while: banquettes, low tables, a bar to lean on
  • Light kept low and warm, so attention goes to the sound

How Music For A While does it

The Vinyl Room is the record-lined side of the house. A curved bar glows under the bubble wall, banquettes and lounge seating run along the room with table service, and the on air booth plays vinyl through the night.

Through the wall, the club room turns the lights down: a laser-lined ceiling, a DJ booth and room to dance. On a typical night a vinyl selector holds the Vinyl Room while a DJ works the club room, so you can move between the two.

“We worked with Rachel to organize a private event in the Vinyl Room at Music For a While. … They ensured we got a tour of the venue, made sure all dietary restrictions were accomodated, and were very transparent about costs. Any responses from the team came within 24hrs which was amazing. … The food and the bartenders were fantastic and everything was beautifully presented.”
