Where to take the afterparty in NYC

The reception ends, the band packs up, and nobody wants to go home. An afterparty keeps the best part of the night going: your people, a dance floor, and a bar that is not closing on you.

Here is what to look for in an afterparty venue in New York, and how Music For A While in Chelsea fits.

What to look for

A great afterparty venue solves a different set of problems from a reception venue.

  • Close to the reception, so the move takes minutes, not a convoy across town
  • A private entrance, so guests in formal wear are not queuing with the public
  • A real sound system and a DJ booth, because this is the dancing part of the night
  • A private bar and simple beverage packages, so nobody is opening tabs at midnight
  • Late-night food, which guests will thank you for
  • The right size: intimate enough to feel full, big enough for the whole wedding party

Why couples choose Music For A While

Music For A While is a two-room underground venue beneath the Hotel Alameda in Chelsea, with a separate lobby entrance and private elevator access, so the party downstairs never crosses the hotel.

Each room has its own fully private bar. The club room has a laser-lined ceiling, a DJ booth and a full sound system; the Vinyl Room next door is the place to sit down, catch up and hear something good on vinyl. Together they take up to 300 guests standing.

Food and drink after midnight

Catering and bar service come from the Hotel Alameda team: open bar packages in beer and wine, standard or premium, plus passed canapés and stationed platters such as wagyu sliders, fried chicken sliders and dessert platters.

Packages are priced per guest, so the events team sends a proposal built around your headcount and timing.

Make a weekend of it

The Hotel Alameda has 61 rooms upstairs, Creatures Rooftop on the tenth floor and the Lobby Bar & Garden at street level, so a welcome party, the afterparty and a next-morning brunch can all happen in one building.

“We worked with Rachel to organize a private event in the Vinyl Room at Music For a While. … They ensured we got a tour of the venue, made sure all dietary restrictions were accomodated, and were very transparent about costs. Any responses from the team came within 24hrs which was amazing. … The food and the bartenders were fantastic and everything was beautifully presented.”

“In one room they had one of my favorite DJs playing some bangers and in the other room they had a vinyl DJ playing records. The drinks were sooo good and the staff was so kind. Will definitely be back!”
